Authentication & Access for Transport

Authentication and access in transport focus on verifying who or what is requesting access to transport-related systems and services, and determining what actions they are authorized to perform. This is a critical enabler of seamless logistical flows across Europe and efficient global transport operations. Today, however, authentication and access processes are often burdened by administrative complexity and heightened fraud risk, caused by fragmentation, cross-border barriers, and limited interoperability between systems.

EU Digital Identity Wallets (EUDIW) and European Business Wallets (EBW) have the potential to fundamentally improve this landscape.

By offering a common regulatory framework and built-in cross-border interoperability, they help streamline, secure, and digitize transport processes that are still heavily dependent on paperwork. EBWs could simplify and secure the activities of businesses and personnel within port areas, ID and digital signatures. It can reduce administrative burden, provide a trusted digital infrastructure and enhance security - unlocking a more scalable, fraud-resistant, and truly European approach to authentication and access for transport.

For example
A company sends a truck to pick up high-value goods from a port in another EU country. Before it is allowed to enter the truck must pass several checks regarding trucks entering the site, the driver being licensed and approved for this cargo, and the company being allowed to transport the goods between borders. Instead of paperwork, phone calls or different national systems, European Business Wallets can enable this to happen digitally and securely while at the same time speeding and simplifying the process.
What we’re aiming for
Streamlining, securing and digitizing an industry overwhelmed by paperwork with the value provided by the EUDI Wallets (Personal and Business)
Providing a regulatory framework and cross-border interoperability in the transport sector.
Simplifying and securing the activities of businesses and personnel within the port areas.
Contributing to the rollout of the European eFTI* and eCMR programs by simplifying ID and digital signature.

*eFTI and eCMR Regulation aims to replace paper-based documentation with electronic data in all transport modes (road, rail, inland waterway, and air transport).
